On 14 July the European Commission (EC) presented the ‘Fit-for-55’ legislative package to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and set the course for reaching climate neutrality in 2050.
The technologies needed are already available today. But we need the right market signals to deploy them at scale. The EU needs to rigorously prioritise investments in energy infrastructure. To deliver climate neutrality in 2050 the EU needs to electrify 75% of its energy demand. And wind energy will need to provide 50% of all that electricity.
At this workshop we discussed what technologies and policies will deliver a reliable climate neutral energy system based on wind energy. We looked into how the system will evolve, how we can optimise the use of existing infrastructure, and what the emerging technologies are. We also heard how governments should support and fund large energy infrastructure works.
